Tunis, Mila, Algeria, 2022
Two summers ago, I met my grandfather’s sister, Tunis, for the first time. She came to visit during the week of my brother’s wedding. I remember that week being over 100 degrees, and we had more than 60 guests in our home. But amidst all the chaos, she allowed me to sit her down in front of the camera.
I asked her about my grandfather, a martyr and freedom fighter during the Algerian revolution. I wanted to know what he looked like, what his personality was like, their relationship and what she knew about his role in the war.
We have no photographs of him; he destroyed and burned everything, all photographs and documents, to protect himself from being tracked down by the French. So, our only connection to him now is through these stories that I am trying to collect.
